Meet the Team

Arpan Karthak

Senior Manager at Darjeeling Animal Shelter

I have been working with the Darjeeling Animal Shelter since 2002, managing the overall operations and accounts of both the Kalimpong and Darjeeling shelters.

My work includes coordinating with staff, managers, veterinary doctors, and Trustees to ensure smooth day-to-day functioning. I handle budgeting, reporting, and general administration, and support the  mission to provide effective and compassionate animal care.

Dr. Shivani Pradhan

I grew up with animals; there isn’t a single time in my life that I’ve known not to have an animal beside me. Ever since I was a child, I wanted to love, heal and care for animals, and I’ve always known that there is a clear connection with me and these wonderful creatures.

The most satisfying cases I deal with on a regular basis are Road Traffic Accident (RTA)-re-homed cases. In most RTA cases, puppies and dogs have to lose a limb which makes life very difficult for them back on the streets. Some kind souls come to our shelter and pick these angels saying that they would give them a forever loving home. Nothing can bring my heart more joy than that moment.

As the Vet-In-charge of DAS, I would love to organize courses like- shelter management for aspiring/current vets, para-vets and volunteers, ABC training for vets and para-vets, animal care and handling, and much more.

Dr. Deo Pandey

Dr. Deo is the much-loved and widely respected Veterinarian-in-Charge at Kalimpong Animal Shelter and senior consulting vet at DGAS.

"I decided to become a Vet because of my love and passion for animals."

"After my B.V.Sc & AH and M.V. Sc from the West Bengal University of Animal & Fishery Sciences in the year 2001, I started as a volunteer at KAS in the year 2002 and later was appointed as a full-time vet in the year 2008."

He has overseen major upgrades in the medical care available to animals presenting with injuries and illness. His ever-increasing skillset and voracious appetite to learn new procedures has led to the entire staff becoming more able to help those in need.

From life-saving surgery to Animal Birth Control procedures, general medical care, diagnoses through blood testing and X-ray, Rabies vaccinations, animal rescue, palliative care and even driving the Animal Ambulance, Dr. Deo is the quintessential all-rounder who lives his passion to help animals.

Yogita Chettri

Animal Care Manager, Public Relations Officer. I also help with fundraising for the Shelter.

I began my journey with Kalimpong Animal Shelter in 2016 as a volunteer. During this time, I was actively involved in the Shelter’s daily activities and animal care. I had the opportunity to learn about animal first aid, rescue work, and the importance of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme. I also accompanied the team on outreach camps in remote areas, gaining firsthand experience of the challenges and impact of such work. After six months of volunteering, I was offered a position at the Shelter by the Founder Trustee, Christine Townend.

Furmit Lepcha

Manager at Darjeeling Animal Shelter

I manage the day-to-day operations of the Darjeeling Animal Shelter, ensuring smooth and effective functioning of all activities. My responsibilities include supervising staff, coordinating with veterinary doctors, maintaining records, and supporting animal care programmes.

I also handle the accounts of the Darjeeling shelter and assist with budgeting, reporting, and other administrative work. Additionally, I work closely with senior management to meet operational requirements and uphold the organisation’s standards.

Anthony 'Ace' Bourke

Ace gained international celebrity when, in the 1960's, he and a friend purchased a lion cub from Harrods in London.

Christian the Lion was reintegrated into the wild and when Ace and his friend John returned a year later, their reunion with the fully-grown lion was filmed. Decades later, it is one of the most-watched clips in YouTube history.

Since those early days, Ace has dedicated himself to animal welfare and is a long-standing committee member of Working for Animals.

He is also a celebrated art curator and collector who has staged several important national and international exhibitions of Aboriginal artwork.

He is the proud and loving owner of a cat.
